Our Story
The Making of
Baxter Goldens
When we began searching for a Golden Retriever, our goal was simply to find a healthy, well-bred companion to become part of our family. That search led us to Colleen Maddox of Dogwood Springs, whose dedication to preserving the Golden Retriever through health, temperament, and sound structure immediately stood out.
We welcomed Ellie into our home expecting nothing more than a wonderful family companion. While we knew she came from exceptional bloodlines, we never imagined we'd one day be showing her.
As Ellie matured, Colleen encouraged us to have her evaluated for the show ring. With her guidance—and the support of experienced mentors along the way—we discovered the world of conformation. They saw qualities in Ellie that, as first-time owners, we hadn't yet learned to recognize ourselves.
What started as a way to celebrate one remarkable dog quickly became a passion. Through showing, we gained a deep appreciation for preservation breeding and the responsibility of protecting the Golden Retriever's health, temperament, structure, and purpose for future generations.
Earning Ellie's AKC Grand Championship was an unforgettable milestone, but even more meaningful was everything we learned along the way. Baxter Goldens was born from that journey.
Today, our program is guided by the same principles that first inspired us: thoughtful breeding decisions, comprehensive health testing, lifelong support for our puppy families, and a commitment to preserving this incredible breed for generations to come.
We remain deeply grateful to the breeders, mentors, handlers, veterinarians, and fellow enthusiasts who have shared their knowledge and encouragement. Baxter Goldens is a reflection of that community, and we are honored to carry those values forward.
